How to cool server racks and cabinets

It is essential to keep the server racks and cabinets cool to prevent heating, leading to several hazardous consequences. Excessive heating of server racks can cause severe downtime, which can affect your work. The heat produced from the CPU and various equipment is considered waste energy and needed to be taken care of. There are several ways to cool down your server racks and cabinets like-

  • It is important to ensure good air circulation inside the server cabinets: It is advised to at least have 63% air circulation through the cabinets in both ways for balanced air circulation. The air circulation can be achieved by a perforated sheet or totally an open cabinet.
  • Determine the convention: it is important to maintain a convention balance inside the cabinets or racks. The convention can be achieved in various ways-

The first way to achieve is natural convention wherein the air will move from a warmer environment to a cooler one. The airflow will maintain the internal temperature, but this method is not very effective as there is not a large difference between the temperatures of the two, and sometimes the airflow is minimal.

The second way is forced convection cooling- it is achieved by the help of fans and coolers inside the cabinets, which will guide the flow of air from a warmer place to a cooler one, maintaining the cabinets' and racks temperature balance.

The third one is active convention cooling, in which an air conditioner is used for cooling down the equipment with the help of a closed-loop structure. The air conditioners' capacity depends on your data center's needs and the number of equipment it has.

  • The placement of equipment is also essential: it is always advisable to leave 20% of the total space in the data center so that the equipment can breathe. There should be proper gapping between the equipment, and they should be placed after leaving some space from the front and back.
  • Monitor the temperature: It is crucial to check the temperature of the data center. There are two ways of doing that- the first one is the manual one wherein you simply put a thermometer and check the temperature, it is fine for a small business, but it will be of no use on a larger level. The second one uses a thermostat, which automatically detects the temperature and switches on the fans when the temperature goes up from the determined one.

There are several companies too which provide server racks cooling solutions! That means you don’t have to install equipment or find a way to cool down your servers. The server racks and cabinets will do it for you. Netrack is one such server racks manufacturing company providing these racks called as iRacks. These are innovative and solve most of the problems.
